Description
This is a front of a sarcophagus depicting the myth of Phaeton, son of the sun-god Helios, who fell from his father's chariot pulled by four horses frightened by the winds, represented in the high part of the relief by the bucina (spiral shell). On the right, next to Helios with the crown of rays, is Diana with the scepter, and below are two other divinities with the scepter, perhaps Juno and Jupiter. In the lowest section are four women, identified as the Heliades (sisters of Phaeton), and the personification of the river Eridanus (the present-day Po), into whose waters Phaeton fell.
